Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire {Travel Guide}

The next step on our engagement moon was the Kancamagus Highway. The Kancamagus Highway, also called the Kancamagus Scenic Byway or simply “The Kanc” is a 34.5-mile highway in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, between the towns of Lincoln and Conway. The highway winds across the state, connecting Bath to Conway through the heart of the scenic and mountainous White Mountain National Forest. So many beautiful mountains. We stayed for just 1 day to explore the Kancamagus, and I feel like it was enough time to do so. I will share everything I did. This highway is a must see to check out some amazing fall foliage.

Where I Stayed

I stayed at the Best Western White Mountain Inn. Located in Franconia. You get a mountain view from this hotel. Free warm breakfast every morning, a pool you can swim in and a fitness center. A guest laundry room if you need to do your laundry before you leave. Pet friendly. Free parking as well. Located 20 minutes from the Kancamagus Highway. I highly recommend staying here. We had a fabulous stay. Everything was clean.

Other Places To Stay

The Kancamagus Lodge- Family owned and operated lodge is nestled in the Heart of The White Mountains, at the entrance of the Kancamagus Highway. The “Kanc” Lodge is everything you expect from a full-service resort, at a price you can be comfortable with.

There are 2 restaurants: Brittany’s Food & Spirits, just steps away from your guest room for breakfast & dinner. CJ’s Penalty Box Sports Pub is open every night for dinner starting at 4p.m. An indoor pool, children's play area and game room as well. No pets allowed.

Where To Stop For The Best Views

Sugar Hill Overlook- A quaint overlook with visibility of the Presidential Range all the way to Canon Mountain. This is an excellent spot to witness Alpenglow when the frost line is still present.

Sabbaday Falls- Sabbaday Falls is one of the most popular locations on the Kancamagus Highway and is accessed via an easy 15-minute walk on an evenly graded and gravel surfaced trail from a paved parking lot, with a stone staircase and gravel walkway directly adjacent to the falls. The falls are a picturesque series of cascades in a narrow flume. Interpretive panels explain the geology of the falls.

Rocky Gorge Scenic Area- A beautiful scenic area. There is a foot bridge over the Gorge which provides an excellent photo opportunity looking upstream to where the Swift River narrows as it cascades into the gorge. The foot path on the other side of the bridge gradually ascends a small rise to Falls Pond. There is a mile long trail around the pond which is a popular fishing area.

Pemigewasset Overlook- For gorgeous views of the Osceola Mountains, stop by the Pemigewasset Overlook. This is a prime spot to view the sunset, and if you stay until after dark on a clear night, you’ll be able to see hundreds of stars from this vantage point.

Iron Furnace- Across the Gale River stands New Hampshire's sole surviving blast furnace. Well over 200 years old, it is unusual, as well, in its octagonal shape and its remarkable condition. A huge wooden shed protected the furnace and workers from the weather. The shed filled the area between the river and the upper terrace in the rear.

Where To Eat

Ninety Nine (99)- A casual bar & restaurant that serves classic pub food at great prices. These are mainly located in the New England area. If you are not familiar of the restaurant 99, it is very similar food to an Applebee's or Chili's.

Gypsy Café- Brightly colored, artwork-filled haunt serving an international menu in cozy quarters with a patio. The menu is packed with unique dishes created from scratch. Daily specials incorporate seasonal and local ingredients. From delicious appetizers & tasty salads to inspired entrées & decadent desserts, your meal will be one of a kind.

The Common Man- Opened in 1985, the Lincoln location has become a favorite stop for locals and travelers alike. Serving the same American fare with flair as other Common Man locations, you’re sure to get a great meal including Nantucket Pie, homemade baked Macaroni and Cheese and the famous Crab Cakes.

Fast Food Options Near The Kancamagus Highway- Dunkin' Donuts, McDondald's & Subway.

That is my complete Kancamagus Highway Travel Guide. This was the last stop on our engagement moon then we flew home afterwards. We had the best time. We got to experience the city life in Salem and then the country life along the Kancamagus Highway. The leaves were at their peak when we were there, so it really was the most perfect time to go. Be sure to check out my Instagram for my yearly Halloween post. I put a lot of time and effort into this year's costume. Have a safe and fun Halloween! I cannot believe today is the last day of October, this month really flew by.

Xoxo,

Chey
